BackCare charity panel product review: Is your chair bad for your health?

“Although saddle seats have been around for a number of years, they tend to be used by business professionals such as dentists and musicians, rather than for general back care. Several are available but most can leave comfort and quality to be desired. BackCare’s product panel tested the Bambach Saddle Seat in several different occupational situations and found it to be extremely functional and superply engineered to very high quality standards. The saddle is very comfortable and has a curved rear lip which is higher than on horse saddles or other saddle seats. This feature tends to encourage a forward pelvic tilt which keeps the spine straight, encouraging the natural lumbar curve and discouraging sitting in the forward slump,, on one buttock or fidgeting from side to side.

In comparison with other saddle seats on the market, this seat is superior but weighs in at the top end of the price range. However, in the panels opinion, this should not be a restraint if you are considering buying a work chair. This is a top quality product, highly functional in the war against back pain. It could be worth considering for general home use if you regularly sit for long periods in front of a computer or keyboard etc, and if you need a really back friendly stool for your all night internet browsing.”

Head injury rehabilitation: Assessment and treatment following brain injury

I was required to find seating solutions for a client presenting with complex needs following a severe head injury. The clients seating needs were identified through both individual OT assessment and by joint assessment with a Speech and Language Therapist. The client’s needs were jointly identified as:

Identification of Seating Needs:

  • To provide an upright, symmetrical position for eating and drinking to minimise the risk of aspiration
  • To encourage mobility around the home and changes in position by providing alternative seating within the home
  • To be at a suitable height to allow eating from a table, or a tray without the need to turn or flex position
  • To be at the correct height for feet to be placed on the floor (or other surface)
  • To be at a suitable height to allow the client to independently transfer to a standing position, with supervision only

Several individual seating assessments were then arranged and each product evaluated in terms of meeting the clients needs. It became evident that there would not be one specific product that would meet the above criteria but the one which came closest was the Bambach Seat. During the process of assessment and risk assessment, an area of need was identified regarding transferring on and off the seat and with the application of the brakes. It was recommended that the client required supervision when transferring on and off the seat and that this supervision would include ensuring that the brakes were fully engaged for safety. A trial of the seat was carried out with the client’s agreement and a graded introduction programme was devised.

The Bambach was then purchased and its purpose was agreed for use at meal times and when drinking fluids. The seat was additionally recommended as a ‘working chair’. It was found that the seat promoted an upright position, allowing the client to engage in activities from an improved functional position which enabled the client to use his arms and hands with more ease, compared to being seated in a wheelchair or standard chair.

Whilst it is difficult to separate the clinical effectiveness of the seat from a number of other variables, it is my opinion that the Bambach seat has contributed to the client’s continuing rehabilitation in relation to: improved posture, improving trunk mobility and functional use of upper limbs. The seat was able to be moved around the home easily to allow a variety of uses.

Thank you for the free trial of the Bambach Saddle Seat. It has taken some time (and a few accidents) to adapt to using it , but now I find it most comfortable. Without the trial I would not have considered purchasing the seat. I was unconvinced of the benefits of using the Bambach. I am now convinced and find conventional seating allows poor posture to creep in again. The second seat is for my nurse and she has also found the seat improves her posture.

Enclosed please find a cheque in respect of the Saddle Seat which has been a revelation. I am recommending it to all my colleagues. Many thanks.

I am writing further to having met you at the Dental Showcase to thank you and your company for the Bambach Saddle Seat. I have had one for eight years (it only feels like three!) I used to suffer with frequent bouts of back pain, and had to have time off work at least once a year. I used to see a chiropractor or osteopath regularly. Now obviously The Bambach Saddle Seat could not cure the back problem, but since I started to use it all the time the frequency of my back pain and of visits to the osteopath reduced. In fact I have not had to see the osteopath for about five years. I have less aches and pains at the end of the day and consequently feel less tired. The seat has been a “real lifesaver” to me. I have had no problems with it at all. The castors have only just worn out and I have just fitted the replacements. I consider the Bambach to be one of the best investments I have ever made and would recommend it unhesitatingly to any dentist who suffers with back pain. Thank you for a superb product.

Having ignored minor back pain for six months, my back finally gave way with a vengeance in January. After time off work and becoming very close friends with the physiotherapist I did what I should have done years ago and contacted you. I cannot praise your seat too highly, without it I would not be working full time without any back pain. Many thanks.
Carolyn Campbell, Ponteland

J has hyper-mobility in her joints and suffers pain and poor posture, she is able to sit well and is able to maintain a good symmetrical posture whilst using the keyboard on the Bambach. She is able to keep her shoulders level, with minimal effort while she worked on the keyboard. She finds that sitting in the Bambach was easier than on a conventional seat. The improvement to her posture on the Bambach in comparison to the chair she normally uses was marked b the fact that she is comfortable and relatively pain free.

As an Ergonomist in Occupational Health I assess a variety of workstations with clients who are experiencing musculoskeletal discomfort at work. My recommendations often include alternative seating to help facilitate a better seated posture and I have had some good results with the Bambach Saddle Seat, particularly in clinical work areas. Clients find it difficlult to appreciate the concept of the Bambach if they haven’t seen or sat on one, so Bambach have kindly provided me with one on a long term loan which enables me to demonstrate the benefits to the potential user immediately, and it’s been a great help. If the client likes the seat, Bambach arrange a no obligation one month trial which enables the client to try it in their working environment to assess its suitability and find out over a period of time whether it helps their particular problem.

Back Pain and Sciatica

Due to recent diagnosis of sciatica, I looked for a solution as my therapist noted my poor sitting posture. Given a largely sedentary job the chair issue was most important. After a short time with the Saddle Seat my physio noted an improvement in posture and I noted a relief from the chronic pain associated with extended sitting. A short period of getting used to the seat is quickly forgotten with the pain release given from the seat itself. Thanks for a wonderful product.

I have a really chronic back problem. Everything about my spine is negative so the idea of buying an expensive saddle stool filled me with dread. My wife kept pestering me so eventually I done a lot of research to find some to try. I chose to try a Bambach stool on the 30 day free trial. It arrived as promised and I started using it, not following the instructions by the way and eventually after sitting on it for 6 hours the first day certain parts of my anatomy were numb. After reading, and following the instructions I got used to the seat and used it for 28 out of the 30 day trial. I was still in a lot of pain and really thought the saddle stool was not for me so it was collected and returned to Bambach. Over the next 3 weeks I was in an increasing amount of pain in my whole back, sciatica was getting worse and I wondered why. It was then I realised that I was not on the saddle stool. It also dawned on me that I have a completly defunct back and the pain I was experiencing was due to not having the Bambach. Believe me the differencein pain levels was huge. I ordered one a few days later and now happily use it nearly every day. I will always have a knackered back. I will always have incredible pain in my back, neck, arms and head but it is less when I use the Bambach. Take the free trial and see for yourself. You will not be dissapointed. Thank you for being patient with me while I gush about this stool and reading to the bottom. If you need me to coroborate any of this review then find me on the net and give me a ring.

Multiple Sclerosis

As an Occupational Therapist working in the field of neurology I have found the Bambach stools a life changing piece of equipment for some of my clients with Multiple Sclerosis. It has enabled one client to continue to work as a hairdresser as she is able to alternate between sitting and standing and has enough energy left at the end of the day to have a social life too! One client says he feels like a more useful member of the family…. which has improved his self-esteem. Another lady who was too exhausted by the end of the day to do anything in the kitchen, is now able to cook a meal for her daughter, instead of having to wait for her husband to get home. The Bambach stools look like normal furniture but have an amazing impact on client’s lives unlike any other equipment I have prescribed in my 20+ years of working

Hip Problems

The Saddle Seat has the additional advantage of forcing the legs of a person into an adducted (knees open) position which has a positive effect on the stress exerted on the hip joints. Orthopaedic examinations show that most hip disease occur in connection with an impaired adduction. Almost all conventional chairs support an adducted (knees closed) position of the legs which is associated with a retraction of the abductors and an extension of the abductors. This chain effects are turned around here and therefore has preventive value
